Merry Christmas to all fellow using Lazarus / FreePascal.

I'm Brazilian, but those who use free software, has no nationality. we all speak one language: Lazarus/Free Pascal.

Thank you to everyone who somehow contributed to my questions.

You do not know the work I have to understand the answers in English, but I'm persistent.

God bless all.

Merry Christmas!

I was wondering who was going to start this topic.

I'm Argentine, i'm not a programmer I was started to program because I've made a little frontend with a commercial program (without having to know programming) but I want to do that with an Open Source alternative, and seeing the Inno Setup help I found pascal, then I found Lazarus and I'm here! The thing that was in need to do that program was a button with Images. And finally I was able to create it with BGRABitmap. I never would have imagined!

Thanks to everyone who helped me to learn.

Greetings to all.

I am not religious, but these holidays mean family reunion and happiness for everybody. In that spirit, Merry Christmas!
In fact, the 25th of december is the Sol Invictu, an ancient tradition to celebrate that the sun comes back. As the days get shorter and shorter in december, it was feared that it would disappear, and after the winter solstice, the days start to get longer. This is what is celebrated on the 25th. Then other religions used this date too, christianity and maybe mithraic mysteries too, as it was a party in the whole roman empire.

So in fact, this depends on the hemisphere, because, winter is in december in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, it would be in June. This difference should be obvious with the Christmas tree, which is a tree that is still green in winter. But if we open our mind to the whole planet, it is clear that the image of a Christmas tree with snow cannot be universal in space and time.

By the way, it is strange that we do not celebrate the summer solstice on the 21th of June. I think that to be logical, we should celebrate both, and celebrate around the winter tree with lights and have a thought about people on the other side of the planet which have summer, and in summer celebrated the sun and empathize for people that are in winter on the other side. This would make it really universal, well at least, global. Like in maths, there is positive and negative numbers, there is a positive (summer) and negative (winter) solstice at the same time.

I think your information is aprox. 2011 years too old. The modern celebration is the birthday of Jesus (despite the date being only representative since the actual one is unknown).

Universality / Globalness are both irrelevant and tyranical. Irrelevant because people have always lived according to their non-universal traditions/beliaths and we are doing just fine this way. They are tyranical because their goal is making everyone think/believe in the same things, but you cannot achieve this goal without banning freedom. If I have freedom then as a christian I will not participate in any kind of solstice commemoration. You can count me out of your universality.
